Clough & Taylor Celebrated

Posted on: Fri 27 Aug 2010

The greatest managerial partnership in football history is being reunited by Derby County, with news that a special monument is being commissioned and will be located on Pride Park.

The Clough and Taylor families are both central to the project and have been brought together by the club to ensure the tribute is a fitting recognition of the men, who made the Rams the best team in England and a major force in Europe.

In addition to the families, Derby County will also ensure the supporters, players past and present and the entire community of Derbyshire play an active role in backing the monument, which will become a significant landmark, not just at Pride Park, but in the City as a whole.

Work is underway on the sculpture that will ultimately shape the statue, with internationally renowned artist Andy Edwards leading the assignment.

Edwards is one of the World's leading experts in sporting statues and is the man responsible for statues of Sir Stanley Matthews and Pele.

He has also put on hold a project involving a sculpture of Mohammad Ali to take on the 'Clough/Taylor monument'.

Derby County will announce in the coming weeks specific ways for people to join the project a help ensure the monument and surrounding area is a fitting tribute.

Rams Vice President Operations John Vicars says this is a momentous day for the club: "Brian Clough and Peter Taylor rose to the summit of English and European football and in the process created a story that will be passed down for generations.

"This monument will recognise the unique partnership they enjoyed and one that football supporters cherish and adore.

"It will become a focal point for Pride Park and a landmark for football supporters from all over the World."

Both families have been involved with the project since its inception.

Wendy Dickinson is Peter Taylor's daughter and she said: "My father loved Derby County and believed his time here, alongside Brian, were the greatest days of his career.

"What they achieved together is astonishing and it is fantastic this club is giving them both the recognition they deserve.

"To see them, reunited at Pride Park, will be very special for the entire family and I know my father would have been very proud."

Simon Clough is Brian Clough's eldest son and he said: "This is a tremendous tribute to what my father and Peter accomplished both at Derby County and football in general.

"They were a partnership in every sense; together they were formidable and I know dad would be proud to have his image side by side with Peter at the Stadium.

"I'm sure the monument will inspire supporters to remember the achievements for decades to come; it means they will never be forgotten."

Roger Davies was signed by Brian Clough and Peter Taylor and went on to become a League title winner with the Rams, and he said: "It's fantastic that the club is making this significant and lasting accolade to Brian and Peter.

"It feels like they are being brought back together and that is how those of us who worked for them and loved them would want to remember them; together.

"I will be enthusiastically supporting this project from start to finish, as I'm sure will many of the players who had the privilege to play for them."
