LADIES ARE THE CUP WINNERS
Derby County Ladies proved themselves to be the cream of the region with a stunning 4-0 victory over Leicester City in the Midland Combination Cup final.
It was the Rams' first-ever victory in the competition and made even sweeter with the final taking place deep in Foxes territory at Whetstone.
Leicester were favourites going into the clash and they started brightly with a drive that hit the post.
But they were rocked as Derby stood firm and roared back to take the lead through Emily Jeffery's superb 25-yard strike.
Cara Newton could have added to the advantage but the Foxes were almost level shortly before half-time as they were denied by the post once more.
But the second half was all Derby and eight minutes in they were two-clear as Sinead Morgan got the finishing touch following a corner.
Rachel Williams and Remi Allen were outstanding in midfield, while goalkeeper Jenny Simpson dealt with everything that came her way.
The Rams sealed victory nine minutes from full-time through Lorna Abbey, who powered home a header from yet another fine Newton corner.
Newton turned from provider to scorer to put the gloss on victory right at the death as she raced on to a through-ball before finishing calmly.
Skipper Leanne Beet lifted the trophy, roared on by a healthy travelling following from Derby, to make up for the disappointment of losing in last year's final.
