A late goal by Ben Turner saw Derby County fall to a 2-1 defeat at Coventry City at the Ricoh Arena.
Derby had trailed to Lukas Jutkiewicz's first-half penalty, but Nigel Clough's men dominated and Dean Moxey's equaliser was thoroughly deserved.
But Turner headed home the winner with just ten minutes to go to condemn the Rams to their second straight npower Championship defeat.
Moxey was denied a second late on by Coventry goalkeeper Kieran Westwood, who produced a top save to deny the emergancy striker.
Rob Hulse's battle to overcome an Achilles injury was ultimately in vein after failing an early-morning fitness test, again leaving Derby down to the bare bones.
Clough chose to hand a first start in Derby colours to Conor Doyle, and Moxey was also called into the starting XI.
Tomasz Cywka (cheekbone) and Chris Porter (hip) were only fit enough for the bench and Luke Varney was not included in the squad.
Clough pulled off a surprise by naming Moxey as a striker, with Commons, Doyle and Green the midfield three in support.
Buoyed by an unbeaten start to the season, Coventry started out with a high tempo.
After seeing that early pressure off unharmed, Derby quickly got into their passing game.
The Ricoh Arena pitch had seen plenty of early morning rain, adding an extra zip to the surface which suited Derby's game.
Chances were very and far between in the early exchanges, but Derby retained the ball well and patiently looked to unlock the Sky Blues defence.
A lovely move down the left almost created a goalscoring opportunity for Derby at the midway point of the half, but Green's cross was cut out by Cameron with Bailey bursting into the box.
Green was almost celebrating moments later when a weak clearance from his Republic of Ireland international team mate Westwood fell straight to him 40 yards out.
With the goal gaping Green picked his spot with a dipping effort, but Turner got back onto the goal-line just in time to head clear and spare Westwood's, and Coventry's, blushes.
At the other end a clearance off the line from Roberts kept the game goalless, with the Welshman hacking Carsley's low drive off the line from a corner.
Seconds later the home side did have a goal to celebrate.
Leacock tripped Doyle in the box, and Jutkiewicz made no mistake by slamming the penalty past Bywater to give the home side the lead.
Derby stuck to their game and look the more dangerous of the two sides, but couldn't find an equaliser before the break.
The Rams were out of the blocks quickly in the second period, and seven minutes into the half they were back on level terms.
A fine ball by Savage picked out Brayford's burst forwards from right-back and his low cross was slammed into the net from close range by Moxey to send the away fans wild.
Moxey's tireless work in an unfamiliar position deserved a goal alone, and the goal was another example of Derby's slick passing and movement.
For Moxey, it was his first goal for the club since his switch from Exeter City last summer.
Derby were dominating and enjoying plenty of the ball, leaving the home side shell-shocked and unable to find their feet.
Another slick, incisive move almost set up a chance for Green to make it 2-1, but he was flagged offside from Commons' through-ball.
With the game there for the taking Derby were having a real go and Moxey flashed another fine Brayford cross just wide.
The game was being played for the majority in Coventry's half, but the second goal Derby craved just wouldn't come.
After Bywater had produced a fine save to deny Platt's glancing header, the goalkeeper was beaten from close range by Turner with ten minutes remaining.
Up from the back, the big defender made no mistake from a few yards out with a firm header.
Straight down the other end Moxey thought he had levelled again sliding in at the far post but Eastwood produced a fingertip save to deny him a second goal.
Despite their best efforts, an equaliser wasn't forthcoming.
The loss was harsh on the Rams, who were excellent throughout.
The performances have been impressive, but now the challenge is to turn them into results.
