Billy Davies took time out before heading for a short break to reflect on reaching the Barclays Premier League and admitted: "We're here on merit".

Davies has been preparing for life in the top-flight ever since the play-off final victory over West Bromwich Albion on Monday May 28.

But he had a few minutes with www.dcfc.co.uk to think back over the events of the last few months.

"We are happy to be in the Premier League and we have got to realise that we are here on merit," the gaffer said.

"Our challenge is to compete with these teams and kick on from there.

"It will not only be difficult for Derby County, it will be difficult for everyone else out there too.

"But we are looking forward to it."

Davies admitted it had been a hectic time since that Wembley success.

"The celebrations were excellent but then it was time to review and reflect on the last 12 months, to try and move the club forward at all levels," he said.

"That has happened, we have been in conversation and will continue to be in conversation.

"It is a great challenge that lies ahead of us."
