HUTCHINGS GIVES HIS SAINTS VERDICT
Assistant manager Chris Hutchings spoke to the press following Saturday's 1-0 defeat at home to Southampton.
He said: "It was very poor today. For the first ten or 15 minutes we did well but fell away very badly.
"We have got players at this club who have not performed today. They have let themselves down, let their team-mates down and let the fans down.
"For ten or 15 minutes we did well and then I felt we sat back a bit after that and let Southampton take the initiative.
"We made mistakes and that seemed to filter through, which we have to get over.
"It does take time for players to settle in but good players normally settle in very quickly.
"It is something we have got to work on and turn things around because obviously today was not good enough.
"We had reports on Southampton that said they are a very good footballing side but we didn't deal with that.
"We were a yard slower, we were second to everything, our passing was off and if you have players who don't perform you are not going to win a football match, it's as simple as that.
"Don't take anything away from Southampton, they deserved to win.
"We had one great chance through Kris Commons and then they go straight up the other end of the field and score.
"If it wasn't for Roy (Carroll) we could have been beaten by four or five today which is very disappointing.
"I think most of the players have played at this level and higher so the pressure shouldn't be an issue.
"Getting into the Premier League was a fantastic feat for this club but they probably punched above their weight, though winning promotion can never be taken away.
"When you're there, if you don't win early on it's very difficult to recover, it becomes harder and harder.
"Your confidence is lost but this year we have got new faces in and we have got to make sure we progress.
"Today was not good enough - it was a very poor showing.
"I think promotion is the goal and I don't see why we cannnot turn it around.
"We did it at Bradford, we did it at Wigan, we have got to get the best out of the players we have and today wasn't good enough.
"We have got a game on Tuesday so we will be in tomorrow morning and trying to put things right for Tuesday.
"Today was not good enough. The players have got to look at themselves and make sure they perform better."
