RAMS WERE WORTHY SAYS JEWELL
Paul Jewell felt his Rams were worthy winners as they earned a 1-0 success at Preston North End in the second round of the Carling Cup.
The only goal of the game arrived shortly before half-time as Paul Green netted with a superb header but Derby were on top for long periods of the Deepdale encounter.
It was a good way for the Rams to bounce back after the disappointment of Saturday's defeat at home to Southampton.
"It was a really good result for us," Jewell said.
"You could see in patches the nervousness and lack of confidence in the players but I felt we grew as the game went on.
"We started edgily but we got the goal and after that they only had one really good opportunity.
"It was pleasing to get the result and it was also pleasing to know that we are not even halfway there yet.
"But we kept a clean sheet and this was a step in the right direction for us."
Green's header was the first time Derby had opened the scoring in a game this season having previously come from behind against Lincoln and Bristol City.
"You could see that once we scored we had a spring in our step," admitted Jewell.
"We can watch all of the videos, we can do the training and all of the talking, but the only way to get confidence is to win matches.
"It doesn't matter how and I wouldn't say it was pretty tonight but we showed spirit, we showed fight, and at times we played some good football.
"We had Paul Connolly and Jordan Stewart making their debuts, Kaz has been here for two minutes and young Miles was terrific in the centre of the park."
Young Miles, as the gaffer refers to him, is teenager Addison - a product of the Rams' Academy and normally a centre-half.
Addison has only made three senior appearances for Derby, including just one under Jewell, and this was his first competitive outing in the middle of midfield.
He had impressed in the position last week during a behind-closed-doors friendly at Moor Farm and convinced Jewell he was worthy of a start at Deepdale.
"Miles has power, he has strength, and having seen him in training he caught my eye, I thought we could make him into a midfielder," said Jewell.
"When he tackles you, you stay tackled! He is brave as a lion and we have lacked a bit of steel in the team.
"Miles has a chance of keeping his shirt for Saturday."
