Paul Jewell is hoping the Rams' Carling Cup win at Preston North End in midweek will be the springboard for his players to approach Saturday's trip to Barnsley with confidence.
Preston have made an excellent start to their season but they were stopped in their tracks by Paul Green's header as Derby reached the third round for the first time since 2001.
Now Jewell's side head to Barnsley on the back of that victory as they go in search of their first league win this season.
"Hopefully, Tuesday night can act as a confidence-booster for us," Jewell said in his pre-match interview with RamsWorld to be screened on Friday.
"We battled hard up there and it's a start as Preston are a decent team so it is a good result for us that we can build on.
"People have been writing us off from day one but there is a long way to go and hopefully we can take the confidence from Tuesday into Saturday.
"We can always improve, we have got to do a lot better and we know we can do."
