DAVIES: IT'S MY BEST STRIKE YET

Posted on: Wed 01 Oct 2008

Steve Davies picks out his first goal in a Derby County shirt as the best of his career - though you won't find it gracing any "greatest strikes" collections.

But it meant a lot when he got the deftest of touches to Nacer Barazite's free-kick as it earned the Rams a late but deserved 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City.

"I'd say that one was my best to be honest!" Davies smiled when giving his after-match assessment.

"I've scored a few good goals in my career but to score in the last five minutes for my new club and get a point is very enjoyable.

"It was a good point considering the three we got on Saturday at QPR as that's now four from two, so hopefully we can go to Norwich this week and get something from there."

Davies's close-range finish hit the back of the net with a little over four minutes remaining - following two late strikes to earn the win at Loftus Road.

It's all down to the new wave of confidence spreading throughout the Rams' squad on the back of five games unbeaten.

Davies says the early-season troubles are well on the way to being put completely out of mind.

"Tonight we were a goal down and we nicked one but the manager is working on making us hard to beat," he said.

"We know we are a good team and we want other teams coming here to Derby knowing that they are in for a tough game - and the same when we go to other grounds.

"If we can keep going and picking up points we know we will be there or thereabouts at the end of the season.

"Even in training you can tell we are a good team but in the first few gmaes nothing seemed to fall for us.

"We would go a goal down and people would get edgy, we wouldn't look like scoring, but now the way we never give up will stand us in good stead."

Davies is expecting Derby to continue their form at Carrow Road this weekend.

He added: "We have scored in the last ten minutes of our last two games and if it's still 0-0 at Norwich late on, they will start getting edgy.

"We know we can stick in there, we know we can score goals, and we want to keep building that run now."
