Kris Commons could be set for a return after injury against Plymouth Argyle on Saturday after a month on the sidelines.

The winger's last game was against Sheffield United on September 13 but he has been ruled out since with a problem at the back of his knee and was absent from Scotland's squad for this week's World Cup qualifying fixtures.

Derby boss Paul Jewell says Commons will be available for selection against the Pilgrims if he comes through the rest of the week without any problems.

"Kris has trained this week and hopefully he will not have any reaction to his injury," the gaffer confirmed.

"But he is a little bit behind the rest because in the last five weeks we have kicked on, energy-wise and confidence-wise.

"If he has no reaction this week he will be available at the weekend.

"As long as he trains from now until Friday, and looks in good nick with no reaction, he will be considered."

Commons's absence saw Stephen Pearson take over the left-wing slot at Swansea City.

Pearson scored at the Liberty Stadium and also started the next three games before being forced off against Birmingham City with a knee injury that will rule him out for up to four months.

Steve Davies took over against the Blues and scored Derby's late equaliser, then went on to impress in the 2-1 win at Norwich City.

Jewell says Commons is not guaranteed to walk straight back into the side once fully fit and admits having plenty of options at his disposal is a nice problem to have.

"At the moment, Steve has got the left-sided spot," said Jewell.

"Kris can play on the left, on the right or off the striker, so he has got a few strings to his bow, but it is nice to be able to say that he has got to fight his way back in.

"And that goes for everyone - if you are playing well, you have got every chance of staying in."
