Chris Porter opened his goalscoring account for Derby but it was a night of frustration at Pride Park as the home side were forced to settle for a 2-2 draw with Swansea City.
The former Motherwell man had poked home the opener just 12 minutes in as he capitalised on a loose ball after Robbie Savage's free-kick was saved by Dorus De Vries.
And two minutes after the interval, when Porter raced clear to add the second, Derby looked to be taking command.
Angel Rangel quickly got the visitors back in it, though Steve Davies and Gary Teale both saw shots cannon back off a post later in the game.
It was all-square with three minutes on the clock through substitute Gorka Pintado as the visitors recovered strongly to take a point back to South Wales.

From the pleasure to a point via the pain - all in a night's work for Chris Porter.

Jordan Stewart's stunning first goal in a Derby County shirt has made the final shortlist for the Mitre Goal of the Year prize at this year's Football League Awards.
Stewart's long-range drive against Sheffield Wednesday in November was picked out as the Rams' top strike of 2008 following a vote among fans here at the official website.

Derby have been dealt a second major injury blow this week with news that midfielder Paul Green has been ruled out for the rest of the season with a foot injury.
The former Doncaster Rovers man broke his fifth metatarsal in training on Friday morning and will miss the remainder of 2008/09 - his impressive first campaign in a Rams shirt.
His absence comes on the back of boss Nigel Clough also finding out this week that youngster Miles Addison is sidelined until next season with his own foot injury.
Green, who moved to Pride Park last summer from Doncaster, has missed just five games since being handed the number four shirt upon his arrival.
He has registered six goals in his 40 appearances this season.

Rob Hulse struck his 15th goal of the season to earn Derby a dramatic 2-1 win at home to promotion-chasing Bristol City.
The Rams had held the upper-hand in terms of the scoreline after Chris Porter's opener with just 52 seconds on the clock.
But the visitors had chance after chance to find an equaliser, only to be denied by the in-form Stephen Bywater - and the woodwork - during a first-half they doiminated.
Derby stepped up after the break with Hulse and Nacer Barazite testing Adriano Basso, who also had to be sharp to prevent a loose back-pass from Bradley Orr creeping in.
Bywater could do nothing when Gavin Williams smashed a 25-yarder into the back of the net with eight minutes left but Nigel Clough's men roared straight back upfield for Hulse to win it.

Derby boss Nigel Clough was full of praise for the way his side reacted positively to a number of body-blows before beating Bristol City 2-1.
The Rams' preparations were hit on Friday when Paul Green (foot) was ruled out for the season, then Steve Davies (toe) was sidelined ahead of the game.
It meant a change in shape with Mile Sterjovski in the centre of midfield for the first time, while injuries also forced Chris Porter and Jay McEveley off against the Robins.
Porter had opened the scoring 52 seconds in before the visitors dominated for large periods and equalised eight minutes from time, only for Rob Hulse to win it for Derby.

Lewin Nyatanga feels the Rams' four-point haul from their last two games sums up life in the Championship.

Bristol City came to Pride Park Stadium on Saturday and had the better of things but went home beaten 2-1.
Both sides are pushing for the play-offs and Nyatanga reckons the results showcased life in this division.

Match-winner Rob Hulse felt the Rams were "due one" after they ended a run of two home games in four days with a 2-1 victory over Bristol City.
Hulse's 15th goal of the season gave Derby the points against the Robins after they had been on the back foot for most of the game.
The performance was in stark contrast to Tuesday's 2-2 draw against Swansea City, when the Rams had enjoyed more of the game only to be pegged back.

Influential midfielder John Eustace has arrived on loan from Watford to add "experience and pedigree" to the Rams' ranks.
The 29-year-old has signed for the remainder of the campaign, with all relevant paperwork now completed, and gives boss Nigel Clough more options in the middle of the park with injuries starting to bite.

Steve Davies came off the bench to earn the Rams a 1-1 draw away to Southampton with a composed close-range finish.
The youngster had only been on for five minutes when he picked up on Martin Albrechtsen's mis-cued shot and steadied himself before rifling the ball home with eight to go.
Such was his impact that he almost won it for Nigel Clough's side with a late curling effort that came back off the inside of the post.
Derby had fallen behind early in the second half after Chris Perry's shot hit the crossbar and rebounded out before striking the unlucky Mile Sterjovski and going over the line.
Neither side could truly claim to have dominated the game but the Rams will be the happier with a point.

Striker Liam Dickinson has headed out on loan to Leeds United for a loan deal that runs until the end of the season.

Highly-rated young Aston Villa midfielder Barry Bannan has joined the Rams on loan for a month.

Barry Bannan marked his Derby debut with a superb goal but the Rams left South Yorkshire on the wrong end of a 4-2 defeat to Sheffield United.
The home side were looking comfortable by half-time after opening up a two-goal lead through Kyle Naughton and Darius Henderson.
Rob Hulse netted against his old club to get the Rams back in it after the break, only for Henderson to make it 3-1 soon afterwards.
Bannan's strike closed the gap once more and Derby pushed all the way for an equaliser that just would not come.
Indeed, the home side added a very flattering look to the scoreline when Craig Beattie scored a fourth deep into stoppage-time.

On-loan midfielder Barry Bannan felt the Rams might have taken a point from Sheffield United - but he was always aware of the home side's danger on the break.
Bannan's debut strike got Derby back to 3-2 in Saturday's Championship game at Bramall Lane and they laid siege to the Blades' goal, only to be caught out right at the death and go down 4-2 to the play-off chasers.
"After my goal we picked up and had a few half-chances that we didn't quite take," the 19-year-old said.

Derby kept their first clean sheet since the 3-0 win at Plymouth early in February but there was a sense of frustration around Pride Park after the 0-0 draw with Barnsley.
It was far from a game for the purists, particularly in a scrappy first half that saw Michael Mifsud squander the best chance at either end of the pitch.
Thankfully the game did brighten up after the break with both sides enjoying spells of pressure.
Stephen Bywater deniied Mifsud again and produced a wonderful save to prevent Jon Macken from finding the net, while a Mounir el Haimour cross struck the post.
Derby, for their part, saw two John Eustace shots stopped by Heinz Muller and Mile Sterjovski headed over, though despite plenty of late pressure they couldn't find the breakthrough.
