MARTIN READY TO KNUCKLE DOWN

Posted on: Fri 12 Feb 2010

David Martin says he will have to work harder than ever before if he wants to establish himself as a regular at Derby County.

The winger teamed up with the Rams on an emergency loan until the end of the season from Coca-Cola League One Millwall on Tuesday.

Only hours after putting pen-to-paper, Martin came off the bench as Derby defeated Championship leaders Newcastle United 3-0 at Pride Park.

Martin made his way into the Football League after catching the eye in non-league whilst playing for Dartford, and he knows he will have to bide his time and wait patiently for his chance to make an impact.

He told Rams Player: "I'm confident in myself and my ability, but I know I have an awful lot of work to do to prove myself at this level.

"I believe in myself, and I know I'll probably have to work even harder than I have before to force my way into the team and then stay there.

"The competition is strong here and the quality is there too, but I'm determined to give it my best shot.

"I know stepping up I have to readjust my game a little and adapt, but I know I have to bide my time.

"The squad here is brilliant and I'm looking forward to being part of it and the facilities we have are unreal."

Martin's move north ended a Derby's long chase for the left winger, who had been monitored by manager Nigel Clough for some time.

The Rams boss got a chance to see Martin up close during Derby's FA Cup 3rd round encounters with Millwall in January, and at that stage the 24-year-old was aware of the Rams' interest in his services.

"It was a long, drawn out move but I'm delighted it is all sorted now and I can crack on playing some games for Derby County," he said.

"I knew of interest from Derby just before the replay, but I didn't pay much interest to it because I wanted to concentrate on my football."

Martin is not available for Saturday's FA Cup tie with Birmingham City after featuring for Millwall earlier in the competition, but is expected to feature against Preston North End in the Championship next Tuesday.
