It may be early days, but Nigel Clough says there were 'plenty of encouraging signs for the season' after watching his Derby County side defeat Leeds United 2-1 this evening.
In front of the BBC cameras Derby spoiled Leeds' party after making their Championship return after three seasons in League One.
Rob Hulse and Kris Commons got the goals, yet it could have been more had it not been for Kasper Schmeichel in the Leeds goal who produced a selection of fine saves.
"I though it was a very good, solid performance," said Clough.
"We created plenty of chances and on another day with better finishing and less better goalkeeping we would have been a little more comfortable.
"It would have been nice to have a two goal cushion, but regardless we are very happy with the victory.
"It was an encouraging performance, but there is still a long way to go."
Clough also revealed how he agonised over whether to go with Hulse or Chris Porter in attack.
He admitted: "Up against his old club we went for Rob, and we're delighted with his goal.
"It was a tough choice between Rob and Chris up top as they both did well in pre-season."
A surprise name on the teamsheet was Shaun Barker, who missed all of Derby's pre-season after knee surgery.
At the break, an even bigger surprise was sprung as the defender replaced the injured Russell Anderson.
Yet he slotted into the back four with ease and produced a typically solid and commanding display.
Clough said: "Shaun only did one hour of training in pre-season, which was yesterday.
"We only put him on the bench today to give everyone a boost.
"We wanted him in and around the squad; and at half-time we asked him if he could go out there and do a job.
"Straight away he said yes, and those are the sort of characters we want here."
