Green Backed To Shine By Ireland Star

Posted on: Tue 31 Aug 2010

Paul Green has been backed for a starring role in the Republic of Ireland's Euro 2012 qualification campaign, which starts on Friday away to Armenia, by Stoke City's Glenn Whelan.

The Derby midfielder looks set to be a regular face in the Ireland camp for the foreseeable future after impressing boss Giovanni Trapattoni during a training camp at the end of last season, which has since led to three international caps.

Ireland are in the same qualification group as Russia, Slovakia, FYR Macedonia, Armenia and Andorra for the European Championships in 2012.

With Blackburn Rovers' Keith Andrews missing due to injury, Green or Manchester United's Darron Gibson could start alongside Whelan in the middle of the park in Armenia.

And Whelan, who has 18 international caps to his name is tipping Green 27-year-old to make an impact.

"If its Paul or Darron who gets the nod, I'm sure they'll do their best," Whelan told the FAI's website.

"Paul waited a long time to get his chance in the summer friendly matches and he did well.

"He's a terrific player. I'd say Keith and I are more defensive-minded than himself but he's well capable of playing in this match."

Ireland will follow the trip to Armenia up with a home tie against Andorra next week.
