Clough: "Fans' Safety Had To Come First"

Posted on: Sun 05 Feb 2012

Nigel Clough has backed the decision to postpone today's game against Nottingham Forest by saying: "We were all looking forward to the game - but the fans' safety is more important."

Shortly before 8:30am this morning it was decided to postpone the game on safety grounds after heavy snow throughout Saturday evening left the surrounding areas of Pride Park and the roads across Derbyshire in an untrustworthy state.

The Rams boss admitted he was looking forward to the big local derby at Pride Park but accepted that the safety and wellbeing of supporters had to take precedence.

He said: "The amount of snow that has fallen in the last day has left the roads in an awful state and there was no way we could play this game, unfortunately.

"We pride ourselves at Derby County in considering our supporters with the decisions we make and we felt it was in the best interests of everyone that the game was postponed.

"Welcoming our local rivals Nottingham Forest to Derby is our biggest game of the season at Pride Park and the fixture was the one almost all of us looked out for immediately when the fixture list came out in June.

"From a football standpoint we were prepared and looking forward to the game, especially given the big game feel to proceedings and the players were really up for the challenge.

"We'd prepared well all week and having taken training yesterday morning at Moor Farm we were all confident we could return to winning ways today.

"However, the safety of the supporters comes first and it's a decision we all believe is the right one and we can look forward to facing Forest later in the season at Pride Park when everyone can get to the game without putting themselves at risk."
