Versatile front-man Luke arrived as a Ram in November after signing on an initial loan deal from Charlton Athletic that became permanent from January 2009 for an undisclosed fee, upon his signing of a three-and-a-half-year contract.

He began his career at non-league Quorn FC before making the move to Crewe Alexandra, under the guidance of Dario Gradi, for a fee of £50,000.

He scored 35 goals for the Railwaymen over a four-year spell and really came to prominence in 2006/07 with 25 in all competitions, including a Carling Cup strike against Manchester United.

That form attracted the attention of numerous clubs in the top two divisions and ultimately earned him a £2m move to The Valley.

Varney's first season in SE7 was hit by injury at the start but he still added eight goals and registered twice on the scoresheet this season before moving to Derby.

He marked his home debut with a goal in the 2-1 defeat to Crystal Palace at Pride Park Stadium in December.

Varney also spent a month on loan with Sheffield Wednesday in 2009 to get some match-fitness back and ended his spell in Hillsborough with two goals in his final game for the Owls.

With opportunities limited, Luke re-joined the Owls - on loan again - in August 2009 up to January 2010. After scoring 4 goals in 19 matches he returned to Pride Park but towards the end of January 2010 he returned to Wednesday until the end of the season, once more on a loan basis.
