David Jones is a graduate of the Manchester United Academy but he made his name with a loan spell at Preston North End during 2005/06.

Jones impressed at Deepdale with his style and assurance in the middle of the park and scored three goals in 25 games for the Lilywhites.

He came through the Academy ranks at Old Trafford but found first-team chances limited to only a handful of appearances in the cups.

After his loan spell at Preston expired, Jones spent the final five months of the campaign on loan at Dutch side NEC Nijmegen, where he gained valuable experience and quickly endeared himself to the Eridivisie outfit's fans.

Jones has one England U21 cap to his name and his final two appearances for United came in the Carling Cup, at Crewe Alexandra and Southend United in the autumn of 2006.

He made his United debut as a substitute in a December 2004 Carling Cup victory over Arsenal.

Jones initially joined Derby on loan in November before making the move permanent in January 2007, for a fee of £1m plus appearances.

He has proven himself to be a calm and composed operator in the middle of midfield, with a sweet left foot and a good eye for goal.

Jones wasn't helped by a series of niggling injuries in the early part of 2007/08 and he eventually underwent a hernia operation that ruled him out for a few months.

But he started to find his feet in the last couple of months of the season and followed up his first Premier League goal at Chelsea with an impressive performance against Manchester United three days later.
