Promising forward Steve was snapped up from League 1 side Tranmere Rovers as part of Paul Jewell's summer 2008 rebuild.
Davies made his Tranmere debut in August 2005 against Oldham Athletic and soon established himself in the team.
Tranmere fought off attention from Leeds United in August 2007 for Davies, who was starting to make a name for himself as a left-sided player.
But he was sidelined by cruciate knee ligament damage for the majority of 2007/08 before making his comeback towards the end of the season.
Overall Davies made 69 appearances for Tranmere and scored five goals.
He featured regularly for the Rams early in the season and scored his first goal in the 1-1 draw at home to Birmingham City at the end of September 2008.
A fractured eye socket followed by a hernia operation hindered his progress towards the end of 2008 but he was back in time for the turn of the year and marked his return with an ice-cool penalty to win January's thrilling FA Cup tie at Forest Green Rovers.
And at the end of March he was hit by another blow when scans revealed he had broken a foot, ruling him out for the remainder of the season.
