Matt McCann reports from the Pirelli Stadium

Another young Reserves side put up a game show on Monday night but ultimately went down 2-0  to Portsmouth at Burton Albion's Pirelli Stadium.

The visitors scored a goal in each half to leave Derby's second string still looking for their first win of the season in the Premier Reserve League (South) - but it wasn't for the want of trying.

Mitch Hanson conceded a penalty on eight minutes converted by Franck Songo'o and Pompey made the game safe 13 minutes from time with a scrambled effort from number nine Danijel Subotic following a corner.

Goalkeeper Lewis price was the only senior player to take the field, the 23 year-old requesting some match practice ahead of Wales's international friendly with Luxembourg later this month.

Otherwise it was a young side, with Academy players making up the rest of the squad.

The Rams started brightly with both strikers, Anthony Robertson and Paris Simmons (pictured above, right), having  decent chances. Penalty appeals were waved aside when Matt Richards appeared to be pushed in the area, while at the other end Price made an exceptional point blank save as Pompey's Cowan Hall headed goalwards.

The home side's brightest moments came after the break. Simmons fired in a brilliant right-footed effort from outside the box and Price pulled off another wonder save from Subotic.
