Rams In Bass Vase Final Action Tonight

Derby to face Burton in the Final of the Bass Charity Vase this evening.

Derby County will go head-to-head with Burton Albion in the final of the Bass Charity Vase this evening.

The Rams will take on the Brewers at the Pirelli Stadium tonight (7:45pm kick-off), with manager Nigel Clough opting to take a strong squad across to Staffordshire to face his old club.

Derby - who were the first-ever winners of the Bass Charity Vase in 1890 – were on the losing side when they last featured in the final of the competition in July 2011, going down 2-1, also against Burton.

Saturday’s two-goal hero at Brighton Chris Martin has been included in the 17-man squad, as well as first-team regulars Jake Buxton, Richard Keogh, Craig Forsyth, Craig Bryson and Johnny Russell – plus first-year scholar Charles Vernam.

Provisional squad to face Burton: Deeney, Morch, Smith, Buxton, Keogh, Hanson, Hoganson, Forsyth, Davies, Eustace, Coutts, Bryson, Jacobs, Martin, Russell, Bennett, Vernam.

The Bass Charity Vase was founded in Burton-on-Trent in 1889 as a football competition to be competed for annually by major teams, particularly Football League clubs.

The proceeds from the games would be donated mainly to medical-related and hospital charities. Its Patrons were Lord Burton and Hamar Alfred Bass who presented a magnificent inscribed silver Rose Bowl (reputed to be one of the most valuable trophies in British football) to be held by the competition winners.

Many famous clubs and players have taken part since the competition started in 1889. Innovation has been a key to its continuing success: even during the difficult times of the two World Wars, the competition took place. Coalville Munitions Girls won during the Great War and a Royal Artillery team was successful during the 2nd World War.

Other past winners include Aston Villa, Birmingham City, Coventry City, Derby County, Leicester City, Liverpool, Notts County, Nottingham Forest, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion.

1989 saw Bass Charity Vase celebrate its Centenary, when with extra efforts and additional events over £25,000 was donated to charities. Some of these other ventures remain to supplement the current football matches' contributions.
