Defender to join Bristol City on loan until January 2014.

Derby County can confirm that James O’Connor has agreed to join League One side Bristol City on a loan deal until January 2014.

The versatile defender, who recently returned to Derby after training with the Robins, has agreed terms on a temporary spell at Ashton Gate until 13th January 2014, with a view to a permanent move.

28-year-old O’Connor, who was made available for transfer by manager Nigel Clough in the summer, played under Bristol City head coach Sean O'Driscoll at both Bournemouth and Doncaster Rovers.

Clough told dcfc.co.uk:“We are pleased Jimmy has been able to get fixed up with a new club for the next few months.

“He is at a stage in his career where he needs to be playing regular, first-team football, and at this moment in time we are unable to offer that.”

O'Connor began his career as a trainee with Aston Villa as a youngster and initially signed for O'Driscoll at Bournemouth in January 2005.

Following his spell on the south coast, the full-back joined Doncaster in May 2006, making 215 appearances for the side, before joining Derby for an undisclosed fee in 2012; featuring 22 times for the Rams.
