Chris Martin felt Derby County were made to pay for not capitalising when they were on top as they slipped to a 2-1 defeat at Wolves.

The 26-year-old forward scored his eleventh goal of the 2015/16 campaign with a sublime free kick to cancel out George Saville’s opener, before the young midfielder headed in the winner with four minutes remaining.

After Martin had scored, Derby had a strong spell in the second half in which he went close again with a dead ball situation, before Jacob Butterfield, Jeff Hendrick and Tom Ince all had opportunities to edge the Rams in front.

Despite being hit with what he described as a late ‘sucker punch’, Martin insists that he and his team mates did not deserve to lose at Molineux.

Speaking to Rams Player HD, the Scotland international said: “The feeling in the dressing room was one full of disappointment because we felt like we didn’t deserve to lose that game.

“It was a bit of a sucker punch towards the end, but Wolves deserve credit, they did ok today, but they have had two shots on target and managed to put them both in.

“We didn’t have any luck on that front, but we should have made the most of our chances when we were on top in the second half. We didn’t capitalise, though, and we have been beaten right at the end.

“We had several crosses, played some good football and we got down the wings really well.

“I thought Tom’s chance was in from the angle that I was at, but when you are in the ascendency like that you have to capitalise if you want to go on and win games like this.

“We weren’t able to do that today, but we felt like we had done enough for a draw.”

Speaking to the media after the game, Darren Wassall, the Head Coach, revealed that he felt his side did not started the encounter in the West Midlands brightly as they had done in the previous two clashes against Brentford and Blackburn Rovers.

Martin echoed those thoughts, citing that whilst the side were full of endeavour and determination, they lacked a clinical spark to make the most of their strong period in the fixture.

With a week until they return to action now, Martin says it is important that the side show a reaction when they face Huddersfield Town at the iPro Stadium on Saturday 5 March.

He added: “We are not getting carried away because complacency can be a big thing, especially in this league.

“Very little separates the sides at the top and bottom and if you’re not quite at the races then it can come back and bite you.

“The reason we didn’t quite do enough to win is because the performance level was not up to that which we have shown in the previous two games.

“I thought the effort and the determination was there, but we didn’t have that spark to unlock them again.

“There are a lot of positives away from this week, but this is a disappointing result for us and one that is going to take some time to get over.

“When we reflect on this next week and reflect on how far we have come this week after the disappointment of the last eight games, where we failed to get any wins at all, we will look at the positives and move forward with the aim of showing a reaction next week against Huddersfield.”
