Derby County defender Jake Buxton has today joined fellow Sky Bet Championship side Wigan Athletic for an undisclosed fee.

The 31-year-old leaves Derby after seven years at the iPro Stadium, after arriving from Burton Albion in the summer of 2009.

Buxton, in total, made 159 appearances for the Rams and scored on 13 occasions, including a memorable late winner at home to local rivals Nottingham Forest in March 2012.

The popular central defender was also a key part of the Derby side that reached the 2014 Play-Off Final.

Manager Nigel Pearson said: “Although I have only been at the club for a short period of time, I have seen first-hand and am well aware that Jake Buxton has been a fantastic servant for Derby County.

“He had limited playing time last season and, given I couldn’t assure him of a regular starting place moving forward, the move to Wigan Athletic is a great opportunity for him.”

Derby County would like to thank Jake for his service throughout his seven years at the club, both on and off the pitch, and wish him every success in the future.
