Gary Rowett is backing Johnny Russell to regain his best form in a Derby County shirt.

The frontman, 26, stated after last Friday’s 1-0 home win over Queens Park Rangers that he has not been at his best for the majority of the campaign.

The 2013 signing from Dundee United has scored just once so far this season, which came in the victory over Leeds United at Pride Park Stadium back in October.

He has appeared on 32 occasions in all competitions and has started both of Rowett’s games in charge since his appointment last month.

Russell had opportunities to find the net against Rangers and the Derby boss regards his comments on his personal form as ‘a great way to be’.

He told RamsTV: “I think it’s a great way for him (Johnny Russell) to be in that he recognises he hasn’t been playing at the level he should be playing at.

“That’s not only for the team but also his own pride.

“For me, he’s saying it because he recognises he has an opportunity to kick on
(under Rowett’s management).

“I have found him great so far and, like all the other players, he is keen to do well and is open to ideas.”

Russell’s displays in the two matches under Rowett have been encouraging.

He set up Matěj Vydra’s equaliser in the 2-2 draw at Forest with a fine cross and produced a lively display against Queens Park Rangers.

Rowett is confident the Scotsman can hit the net again before the end of the season.

“I have seen as much of him as I have seen any of the players; I like what he’s about as a character,” he said.

“He works hard, plays for the team and has got quality.

“Sometimes when you’ve not done as well as you would have liked in terms of goals and assists, you can snatch at things a bit.

“In your mind, you’re thinking ‘I need to take this’ rather than relaxing and letting your instincts and ability do the work.

“He will get more opportunities and I am pretty sure he will get a goal between now and the end of the season.”
