Defender Mike te Wierik joined Derby County as a free agent from FC Groningen in the summer of 2020.
The centre-back, who can also play at right-back, is not only renowned for his impressive defensive abilities after playing all of his career prior to joining Derby in the top-flight in Holland, but also his leadership skills.
He agreed a pre-contract deal with Derby in February 2020 to join the Rams when his deal with FC Groningen came to an end.
Manager Phillip Cocu admitted upon te Wierik’s signing that he was a player he knew well from his time managing at PSV Eindhoven and that the defender would fit into Derby’s style of play.
Te Wierik began his career with Heracles Almelo and he made over 160 appearances over the course of seven seasons.
He moved to FC Groningen in the summer of 2017 and was closing in on 100 appearances for the Noordlease Stadion side prior to the 2019/20 season being curtailed in Holland due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The defender, who racked up more than 200 appearances in the Eredivisie, also has international honours for his country at Under-20 and Under-21 level.
