Biography

Former Derby County midfielder Bradley Johnson returned to the club in the summer of 2023 to take up a coaching role in the Academy where he will assist the Under-21s’ coaching staff as a player-coach.

As well as taking on the coaching position as part of the Academy staff, Johnson is eligible to feature for the Under-21s as an overage player in their Premier League 2 campaign.

The move will see Johnson not only begin his coaching journey on a full-time basis but also be in a position to contribute to the development of the Rams’ young players both on and off the field.

Johnson’s playing career has seen him record almost 700 appearances in club football, including just under 600 in league competition, as well as gaining promotion on a number of occasions.

His time with Derby spanned across four seasons between 2015 and 2019 after signing from Norwich City and he recorded 140 appearances for the club in the process, as well as scoring 14 goals.

He was most recently contracted as a player with MK Dons during the 2022/23 season in League One and oversaw first-team matters for a Carabao Cup tie against then Premier League side Leicester City in December 2022 on an interim basis.

Hackney-born Johnson began his professional career with Cambridge United in 2004 after being on the books of Arsenal as a youngster and he went on to make his name in the EFL with Northampton Town between 2005 and 2008 after successful loans at Gravesend & Northfleet and Stevenage.

He made the step up to Leeds United between 2008 and 2011, during which time he also had a short loan stint with Brighton & Hove Albion, before enjoying a successful spell at Norwich City between 2011 and 2015.

After spending four years with Derby between 2015 and 2019, Johnson went on to have spells with Blackburn Rovers and MK Dons prior to returning to the Rams to begin his coaching journey ahead of the 2023/24 season.
