Derby County have this afternoon finalised the signing of Tottenham Hotspur forward Simon Dawkins on a 93-day emergency loan deal.
The 25-year-old completed formalities of the temporary move to Pride Park Stadium after training today and will be available for selection for the Rams’ Sky Bet Championship game away to Watford tomorrow, pending clearance from the Football League.
Dawkins, along with Mali international midfielder Kalifa Cisse, has been training with the first-team squad this week and has impressed Head Coach Steve McClaren.
McClaren revealed earlier this week that he was eager to bolster his squad with Johnny Russell, Jeff Hendrick, Paul Coutts, Mark O’Brien, Adam Legzdins, Shaun Barker and James Bailey all recovering from injury.
After completing his first signing, McClaren told dcfc.co.uk: “I’m really pleased we’ve been able to bring Simon and add to the group we already have.
“He’s someone I know and it was a ‘no-brainer’ getting him in to train with us and this week has been about seeing how he settled into the squad, rather than about his ability.
“He has done very well and it’s great to have him on board for the next three months.”
Dawkins joined the Tottenham Hotspur Academy in July 2004 before linking up with League One side Leyton Orient on loan during the 2008/09 season and made 14 appearances during two separate stints with Orient.
During the same season, Dawkins made his only appearance for Spurs by being named in the starting XI in their 4-0 UEFA Cup win over Dynamo Zagreb.
Last season he agreed terms on a loan move to Premier League side Aston Villa on the final day of the January transfer window and went on to feature four times for the Villans, including appearances against Manchester City and Arsenal.
Before his spell at Villa Park, he spent the previous two campaigns on loan at Major League Soccer side San Jose Earthquakes, where he netted 14 goals.
Elsewhere, Cisse, who is currently a free agent, will continue to train with the remainder of the squad, and have his situation monitored by the coaching staff.
