New signing Conor Sammon believes the Rams deserved a lot more out of their game with Bolton Wanderers, as Nigel Clough’s men slipped to a 2-0 defeat at the Reebok Stadium.
Goals in the final 20 minutes from Kevin Davies and Chris Eagles secured the three points for Owen Coyle’s side, however the Rams were left ruing their missed opportunities in front of goal.
Sammon, who was handed his first start for the club just 24 hours after completing his move from Wigan Athletic, says that although the side left Bolton bitterly disappointed, there were plenty of positives to take ahead of Saturday’s trip to Wolverhampton Wanderers.
He told Rams Player: “We had some clever play in the first half; John Brayford got forward and put a great ball in, (Craig) Bryson was breaking from midfield, Jamie (Ward) was looking clever around the box and (Nathan) Tyson upfront chased everything down.
"Overall we played really well and more than matched Bolton, it is certainly frustrating coming away conceding two late goals – I don’t think it was a 2-0 game.
“However, we have got plenty of positives to take out of the game and the manager has said that he is pleased with lots of aspects of our game.
“He knows we can improve in areas too and we will look to build on that, starting with Wolves on Saturday.”
Sammon came through just under 70 minutes at the Reebok Stadium before being replaced by Will Hughes, and the 25-year-old admitted that apart from the result, he was delighted to make his debut for the Rams.
He added: “On a personal note I enjoyed it immensely. After signing yesterday I was looking at the fixtures and I was desperate to play straight away.
“To get the chance to play against Bolton was a great experience. We knew it was going to be a tough test but I think we started the game really well and created some good chances.
“I really enjoyed it on a personal level and I would have enjoyed it even more had I got that first goal. I had that chance early on and if it goes it would’ve changed the whole complexion of the game massively.”
