Derby County’s Under-18s fell to a narrow 1-0 defeat away to Liverpool in Premier League-North on Saturday.

The Rams went behind early in the first-half but reacted well after half-time to produce some flowing attacks which would ultimately bring no reward.

Steven Gerrard’s Liverpool took the lead in the game after 13 minutes. An inswinging corner fell to Niall Brookwell, who stabbed the ball home past Bradley Foster-Theniger.

The home side went close again midway through the first-half when a curling left-footed strike from Yasser Larousi went over the bar and nestled on top of the net.

Derby were defending well, but also provided an attacking threat themselves. Louie Sibley, who starred so impressive as a second half substitute for the Under-23s against Manchester City EDS the night before, produced some purposeful driving runs from midfield, whilst the Rams’ defence made some vital blocks to keep Liverpool’s lead to one goal.

A good set-piece opportunity for the Justin Walker’s and Rory Delap’s side then saw Jordan Mills curl in a dangerous ball to the front post area. Jack Stretton rose highest to meet it but couldn’t direct a difficult header goalwards.

Liverpool would have the last chance of the first period as Jack Bearne’s free-kick cannoned back off the crossbar and away from danger.

Derby started the second-half looking determined and had the half’s first clear opportunity. Louie Sibley received a pass from Connor Dixon and shot across goal, but the ball was well tipped wide by Liverpool keeper Caoimhin Kelleher.

Walker’s and Delap’s side certainly had control of the game during this spell, but quick passing and intelligent play were produced without the team being able to produce the final piece of quality to find an equaliser.
