Derby County youngster Liam Thompson has put pen-to-paper on a new contract.

It was announced late on Friday that Clowes Development (UK) Ltd had completed their purchase of the club to take Derby out of administration and work is now underway to rebuild the Rams’ squad for the upcoming 2022/23 Sky Bet League One season.

The central midfielder, who enjoyed a fine breakthrough season in the 2021/22 campaign, has signed a new two-year contract.

Thompson, who is 20 and another graduate of the Rams’ Academy, is now contracted with the Rams until the conclusion of the 2023/24 season.

The midfielder racked up 24 appearances for Derby last season after impressing in the Under-23s.

While he was made to wait for his opportunity to impress owing to restrictions placed on the Rams, he eventually made his professional bow with a Man of the Match performance in the 3-2 home win over AFC Bournemouth last November.

He was one of many players to successfully make the step-up from Derby’s Academy to the first-team set-up last term and will now look to kick on again as the Rams prepare for the upcoming 2022/23 campaign in League One.
