Three members from Derby County’s ranks were in action on Friday whilst away on international duty.
Striker Jamie Ward claimed his eighth international cap for Northern Ireland after being named in the starting XI by Michael O’Neill for their World Cup Qualifier away to Azerbaijan, and played 84 minutes before being substituted as they fell to a 2-0 defeat.
Northern Ireland dominated the first half in Baku and Ward saw a close-range header saved as well as firing over from inside the box.
However, Rufat Dadasov fired the hosts in front after the break and, though Huddersfield Town’s Martin Paterson hit a post, Mahir Shukorov scored a free-kick after Manchester United’s Jonny Evans saw red for violent conduct.
Next up for Northern Ireland is their final 2014 World Cup Qualifier on Tuesday, away to Israel.
Elsewhere, defender Kieron Freeman (Wales Under 21s) and first-year professional Rhys Sharpe (Northern Ireland Under 21s) were also in action on Friday afternoon.
Freeman played the full game as Wales ran out 2-0 winners against Lithuania in Bangor in a UEFA Under 21 Championships Qualifier, thanks to two goals from Tom Lawrence, and their next game is another Qualification match, against San Marino on Tuesday.
Sharpe meanwhile played the full 90 minutes as Northern Ireland lost 1-0 to Belgium in their latest UEFA Under 21 Championships Qualifier.
They will return to action on Tuesday with an away game against Serbia.
