Match Report

Derby County secured back-to-back wins on the road in the Sky Bet Championship with a 2-1 triumph over Charlton Athletic on Tuesday night.

John Eustace’s charges came into the match hot off the back of a 1-0 win at Preston on Saturday and looked to continue their momentum when they headed to the capital city.

The hard work of Patrick Agyemang put Derby ahead as he slalomed past two defenders and towards the byline, where he saw his low cross turned in by Charlton defender Macauley Gillesphey.

Bobby Clark netted his second league goal of the season to put Derby two ahead in the 58th minute following an impressive team move. The lead was shortened quickly by Charlton winger Tyreece Campbell with a strike from long range.

After keeping Charlton at bay, Matt Clarke was shown a second yellow card in the 85th minute, with a challenge on the edge of the box, and Derby had to hunker down to see out the match in London.

Key Moments

Goalkeeper Richard O’Donnell made his competitive debut for the Rams as a late change when Jacob Widell Zetterström was ruled out through illness following the pre-match warm-up in South London.

Patrick Agyemang had the first effort of the match when he aimed a low shot from distance, but the power wasn’t enough to trouble Thomas Kaminski in the Charlton net.

The Addicks’ newest signing looked to provide the threat for the hosts when he got his head to Campbell’s cross in the eighth minute, but the Scotsman could only send the ball looping wide of the target.

Campbell was next to pose a threat as he cut inside to shoot, but was thwarted by the outstretched leg of Sondre Langås.

Derby had the lead in the 17th minute when Agyemang played a one-two with Clark, danced past two defenders and forced an own goal with his ball across the face of the goal.

O’Donnell was called into action for the first time after 32 minutes as Sonny Carey struck a free-kick down low for the shot-stopper to stretch and save.

Corey Blackett-Taylor bore down on goal moments later as Brereton Díaz headed the ball in behind the defence with Agyemang also in tow. Blackett-Taylor opted to shoot, and Kaminski made the save.

A long ball from Langås nearly saw Derby compound their advantage as the defender fed Brereton Díaz down the right flank in the 45th minute, and the Chilean aimed for the target but saw his chance slide just wide of the opposite post.

HALF-TIME: Charlton Athletic 0-1 Derby County

Agyemang came near in the 50th minute when Joe Ward fizzed a low cross into the box, but the striker clattered into both the ball and defender Kayne Ramsay from close range and saw his effort go wide of the mark.

Derby made their first changes when Rhian Brewster and Lewis Travis entered the park in the 58th minute, replacing David Ozoh and Blackett-Taylor.

Matt Clarke made a crucial tackle moments later as the hosts aimed to break forward on the turnover, with the defender getting his leg to the ball to stop a charging Campbell.

Clark made it 2-0 soon after, with an excellent piece of build-up; Agyemang and Brereton Díaz linked up tidily to see the midfielder charge into a one-on-one where he made no mistake.

But Charlton quickly narrowed the deficit when Campbell hit one into the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

O’Donnell made an outstretched save when Gillesphey hit the target from a close-range free-kick in the 72nd minute as the hosts looked to take advantage of a period of momentum following their goal.

Oscar Fraulo and Lars-Jørgen Salvesen were John Eustace’s next changes as Derby looked to keep their position in the match firm with 15 minutes of regulation time remaining.

Clarke’s dismissal in the 85th minute left Derby with a limited number as they came under pressure from Charlton, who were seeking an equaliser.
