Bennett Starts As England U17 Lose

Rams striker unable to help England lose to Germany in the Algarve Tournament.

Derby County striker Mason Bennett was named in the starting XI for England’s U17s as they went down 2-1 to Germany on Friday afternoon in their first game of the Algarve Tournament.

16-year-old Bennett started up front and was replaced after 70 minutes by England U17 coach John Peacock.

A fine strike from Everton youngster George Green had put England ahead against Germany in Lagos. But, an equaliser from Donis Avdijaj and a second-half strike from Timo Werner for the Germans saw them come back strongly and get off to a winning start in the annual competition in southern Portugal.

Next up for England is a game against Portugal on Sunday (10th February), and then Holland next Tuesday (12th February).

Bennett, who is Derby’s youngest-ever player and goalscorer, will miss the Rams’ games against Sheffield Wednesday (9th February) and Hull City (12th February).
