Former Ram returns to Derby County to look back on his playing days in front of 200 guests.
Derby County legend Charlie George was at Pride Park Stadium on Tuesday afternoon to roll back the years at look back on his playing days with the Rams.
Now 62, George was in town to attend the ‘Lunch with Charlie George’ event before a 200-strong crowd, which was hosted by BBC Radio 5 Live presenter Tom Watt and sponsored by HSKS Greenhalgh, a local Chartered Accountants and Business Advisory business.
George joined Dave Mackay’s Derby in 1975 and he spent two and a half seasons at the Baseball Ground, scoring 34 goals in just over 100 league appearances. He memorably scored a hat-trick against Real Madrid in the European Cup in a 4-1 victory for Derby, although they lost the return leg 5-1 to bow out 6-5 on aggregate.
He also gained his one and only England cap whilst on Derby’s books, in 1976.
After leaving Derby in 1978, he went on to play for the Minnesota Kicks in the North American Soccer League, Southampton, Nottingham Forest and Bournemouth. He returned to Derby County for a second time in 1982 under Peter Taylor before moving on to Bulova in Hong Kong, Dundee United and Coventry City.
Attendees were treated to a two-course lunch, followed by cheese and biscuits and coffee, as well as the opportunity to hear the legendary ex-Ram recall his most memorable footballing moments.
Questions were also posed from the floor and an auction took place, as well as a quiz to test the football knowledge of all those in the Toyota Suite.
