Midfielder's goal on Saturday will go down in the record books.

Derby County registered their 8,000th competitive goal in the 3-1 defeat against Birmingham City at the weekend.

The honour of scoring that milestone goal belongs to midfielder Ben Davies after he opened the scoring at St Andrews, and the 31-year-old now has a rare double.

In scoring the first goal of the 5-0 home win over Tranmere Rovers in the FA Cup back in January, Davies netted the Rams’ 600th goal in the competition.

Going back to the 8,000th goal, it came in Derby’s 5,133rd competitive fixture, after a further 919 games since the 7,000th goal was scored.

Derby’s 1000th goal was scored in 3-2 home win over Bury on October 8 1904, when Reginald Hounsfield scored the second goal, in between goals by Steve Bloomer and Archibald Hunt. The goal was scored in the Rams’ 524th competitive first class game from 1884, with 10 games in the FA Cup between 1884 and 1888.

The 2000th goal came in the 1190th competitive game, after an interval of 666 games. It came in a 5-1 home win over Fulham on 13th September 1924. Centre forward Albert Fairclough scored four goals that afternoon, the last of which was the clubs’ 2,000th goal, with Harry Storer scoring the fifth and final strike.

A further 528 games came and went before Derby saw their 3,000th goal scored. It was the second goal in 3-2 away win over Birmingham on 21st March 1936, scored by Douglas ‘Dally’ Duncan, whose goal came in between a brace scored by fellow Scottish international Hughie Gallagher. That game was the 1,718th competitive fixture for the club.

The 4,000th goal was scored by Jack Parry, with the second of five goals scored in the first half of a Third Division (North) fixture away to Chester. The game was played on 12th November 1955, with the other goals coming from Albert Mays, with a brace, Jesse Pye and Tommy Todd. The victory came in game 2,293 for the Rams, after a further 575 games.

Goal number 5,000 was scored in game number 2,794, a 3-1 away defeat to Birmingham City on 2nd April 1968. It was scored by John O’Hare, some 501 games after those Third Division (North) days.

The 6,000th goal was scored by Kevin Wilson, who is now manager of Ilkeston FC. It was the Rams’ first goal in a 2-2 home draw with Newcastle United on 27th February 1982. It was 701 games later in the 3,495 the competitive game for the Club. Paul Emson scored the other goal for the hosts that day.

It was a further 13 years before the 7,000th goal came on 16th December 1995, in a 1-0 away win at Millwall. The Rams were on their way to the Premier League that season under Jim Smith, and leading scorer Dean Sturridge added to his tally with a fine close range strike. That was the Rams’ 4,214th competitive game, 719 games later.
