Kelle Roos Hopes He Has Repaid The Faith

Young goalkeeper believes whoever the Rams face in the next round will be a big test

- Dutch goalkeeper impressed as Derby secured 2-0 victory over Reading

Kelle Roos is hoping he repaid the faith Steve McClaren has him after keeping a clean sheet on his Derby County debut last night.

The 22-year-old Dutch goalkeeper, who signed from Nuneaton back in January, played a big part in the Rams’ 2-0 Capital One Cup victory over Reading – a result that secured Derby’s place in the Last-16 of the competition.

Before Derby comfortably secured their victory, Roos was called into action twice – the first to deny Jamie Mackie when through on goal and the second from Hal Robson-Kanu from close range.

After playing his part in Derby’s win, Roos has admitted he has had to be patient to make his start, but enjoyed making his latest step up at in the surrounding of the iPro Stadium.

Speaking exclusively to Rams Player, Roos said: “These things can happen, it was a bad pass and he (Jamie Mackie) was through one-on-one, but I managed to keep it out of the net.

“They had a quite bit of ball possession as well, even when you see the game before we had a bit more, but the shape was good and they didn’t have many chances.

“We broke very quickly and our transitions are very dangerous with our quick midfielders. The shape was good, and from there, we were able to build.

“It’s always nice to get out on the pitch and to enjoy football. It’s about winning games and enjoying what you are doing.

“I enjoyed it more, of course there is more tension on the game and there is a different atmosphere in the stadium. I thought we dealt with it well.

“You know as a goalkeeper that you have to be patient. Luckily, the gaffer gave me a chance last night and is hopefully happy with what I showed.”

Roos has had to remain patient for his opportunity to deputise in place of Lee Grant after establishing himself as the Club’s goalkeeper to push Grant for a starting spot.

Part of that has been down to the fact the former PSV Eindhoven ‘keeper broke his had in two places back in pre-season, but after making his first appearance, he is hoping to feature in the next round of the competition – no matter who it is against.

He added: “I had some problems with my hand after the Zenit game and we realised after the game that I had broken my hand in two places.

“It was a bit of set back, but I could still be on the bench because I could still catch balls, but not too many because it would hurt too much.

“I’m fully fit now and I’m happy to be back and it was nice to get a game now.

“It’s nice to have the big clubs in the cup like this, but for me it doesn’t matter.

“Every club is a big club in this competition. It is always good to play at home and we will see what happens.”
