Derby County is saddened to learn that former Rams player and manager Dave Mackay has passed away at the age of 80.

Scotsman Mackay joined Derby in 1968 from Tottenham Hotspur and went on to help the Club win the Second Division title in 1968/69 under Brian Clough, playing a key role by wearing the captain’s armband for the Rams and as a result he was named joint ‘Footballer of the Year’ in his first season at the Baseball Ground, along with Tony Book.

After leaving for Swindon Town in 1971, Mackay returned to manage Derby between 1973 and 1976 and guided the Rams to the First Division title 40 years ago in 1974/75.

Mackay also helped Derby to a Watney Cup success in 1970 as a player and also lift the Charity Shield in 1975 as manager, as well as guiding the Rams to the Semi-Finals of the FA Cup in 1976.

Mackay also represented Heart of Midlothian, Tottenham Hotspur and Swindon in his playing days, in addition to being capped by Scotland at full international level.

At Tottenham he was part of their First Division title triumph in 1960/61, as well as lifting the FA Cup on three separate occasions, in 1961, 1962 and 1967, and also the European Cup Winner’s Cup in 1963.

Derby County’s President & Chief Executive Sam Rush said: “Everyone at Derby County is truly saddened at the news that Dave Mackay has passed away.

“Dave Mackay is a legend at Derby County and his name will forever be etched into the history of the club for the fantastic contribution that he made, both as a player and a manager.

“Fans still talk of his influence to this day and he will be forever remembered as a true great of our Football Club.”

He added: “Our condolences and thoughts go to his family and friends at this time.”
