Derby County have made Jacob Butterfield their eighth signing of the summer transfer window.

Derby County have made Jacob Butterfield their eighth signing of the summer transfer window.

The 25-year-old midfielder has today joined the Rams from fellow Sky Bet Championship side Huddersfield Town for an undisclosed fee.

Butterfield, a former England Under 21 international squad member, has signed a four-year deal until the summer of 2019.

Derby have been keen to strengthen their midfield options in recent weeks, after Will Hughes was ruled out for a number of months with an ACL knee injury.

The Rams secured the signature of Huddersfield’s Player of the Year for the 2014/15 campaign at the Training Centre in partnership with the University of Derby this afternoon, following a successful medical examination.

Head Coach Paul Clement commented: “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to bring Jacob Butterfield to Derby County.

“As I’ve stated publically in the last few weeks, if we were going to add to our squad it would be a case of making a quality addition rather than bringing someone in just to make up the numbers.

“In Jacob, we have a very talented player and an individual that is experienced at Championship level.

“He is positive addition to our already strong squad and in light of Will Hughes injury, Sam Rush and Chairman Mel Morris have worked tirelessly to get this deal over the line.”

Butterfield, who was on the books at Manchester United as a youngster, began his professional career with Barnsley.

He made exactly 100 appearances for the Reds between 2007 and 2012 and, at the age of 21, he captained the side.

He was also called up by England’s Under 21s in November 2011 as a result of his impressive form for Barnsley.

At the end of his contract with the Oakwell outfit he joined Norwich City, appearing three times for the Canaries, and continued his football development on loan at both Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace.

Butterfield joined Middlesbrough for the 2013/14 and was a regular in their side, making 32 appearances in all competitions before joining Huddersfield Town last summer.

In total he made 50 appearances for the Terriers, establishing himself as a key player at the John Smith’s Stadium, scoring seven times.
