Chris Baird is to return to Derby County from his emergency loan spell at fellow Sky Bet Championship side Fulham.

Baird, 34, joined the West London outfit until the end of the campaign back in February but Derby have activated a clause in the agreement to bring the player back to the iPro Stadium.

Academy graduate Jamie Hanson sustained an injury to his shoulder last week and, as a result, will miss the rest of the current campaign - prompting the Rams to recall Baird.

The Northern Ireland international, capable of playing in defence or midfield, has made 16 appearances for Derby this season after joining from West Bromwich Albion last summer.

Baird made seven appearances during his loan spell at Craven Cottage, adding to the 165 he made for Fulham between July 2007 and July 2013.

Head Coach Darren Wassall told Rams Player HD: “It looks as if Jamie’s season is over.

“He’s going to go and see a surgeon this week in London to have a look at the extent of the damage but it doesn’t look good for him.

"It’s a shame for Jamie because he covers us in three positions. It’s more disappointing, though, for him more than anybody else because he has played a major part in the last three months of the season.”

On Baird's return, Wassall added: “Chris can play in a number of positions and will give us good cover. We have to protect ourselves and he will be back in training on Wednesday.”
