International Review: Baird Unused As Northern Ireland Record Historic Win

Derby County’s Chris Baird was an unused substitute as Northern Ireland recorded an historic 2-0 win over Ukraine on Thursday evening in their second 2016 UEFA European Championships group game.

A header by West Bromwich Albion defender Gareth McAuley, just after half-time, and an added time strike by substitute Niall McGinn, who plays for Aberdeen, helped Michael O’Neill’s side to their first tournament victory since 1982.

Baird, who started in the 1-0 defeat to Poland last weekend in their opening Group C game, cheered on his team-mates from the bench in Lyon.

Former Derby forward Jamie Ward was named in the starting line-up, while ex-Rams goalkeeper Roy Carroll was an unused substitute.

Northern Ireland’s final group game is against World Champions Germany on Tuesday 21st June (5pm BST kick-off), where they will be hoping for another positive result as they aim to make the knockout stages of the competition.
