Rowett Hails 'Fantastic' Keogh

When Richard Keogh surged forward to set up Johnny Russell for the all-important second goal in Derby County’s win against Aston Villa last weekend, it was a continuation of a theme.

The Rams’ skipper has recorded three assists in the Sky Bet Championship so far this season; more than any other centre-back in the division.

It’s no surprise to hear then, that Gary Rowett rates Keogh as the best in his role.

He told RamsTV: “His performances have been amazingly consistent, I don’t think that there is a better ball-playing centre-back in the division.

“The way that he carries the ball out of defence allows us to start attacks, we give him the license to do that.”

Keogh is now in his sixth season at Pride Park Stadium, and there have been plenty of ups and downs along the way.

The Republic of Ireland international is one of many members of the squad that has been with the club for an extended period, and Rowett believes that performances so far this season have helped to dismiss the suggestion that some players had overstayed their welcome.

He said: “When I first came into the club, people had all sorts of opinions of players like Richard and they were saying that maybe he’s been here too long.

“In my experience, it’s best to judge players how you find them.

“He’s been a fantastic player for us this year, and I think that the lazy criticism that gets thrown at some of the players just because Derby haven’t been able to win promotion starts to dissipate when performances are this consistent.

“He’s undoubtedly been one of our best players so far this season.”
