Villa ‘Gifted’ Victory To Derby

Frustrated boss Steve Bruce accused Villa of “gifting” victory to Derby after falling to a 2-0 defeat at Pride Park.

Matt Maher from the Express & Star reported: “From the very first minute we made an error which put them through on goal and didn’t really recover.

“Individual errors happen. You just don’t need them to happen in a big game like today.

“It’s something we have to eradicate because we’ve made far too many mistakes.”

Weimann Nets Against Former Club

Andreas Weimann came back to haunt his former club with the opening goal that set Derby on their way to a 2-0 win over Aston Villa at Pride Park.

ESPN.co.uk reported: “The Austria international, who joined County from Villa in 2015, scored after a mistake by Glenn Whelan and Villa created little before Johnny Russell secured Derby's fifth victory in six games.

“Villa's injury problems were highlighted by Josh Onomah playing as a striker but it was their defence that came under pressure from the start as Matej Vydra cut them open.”

The Monday Verdict: Derby’s Promotion Chances

Victory over Aston Villa confirmed Derby County's position among the Championship's promotion candidates and they are in the mood to stick around.

Steve Nicholson from the Derby Telegraph wrote: “Villa arrived at Pride Park Stadium as one of the division's form teams armed with a record of only two defeats in 18 league games, a sequence that included 10 wins.

“This was billed as a test of Derby's credentials but Gary Rowett's team has faced a number of tests in the past two months - and passed them.”
