Harry Wilson has wasted no time getting stuck in following his return from injury, and he is hoping his first goal in a Derby County shirt will kick-start his campaign in front of the goal.

The 21-year-old winger cracked open the floodgates when he cancelled out Brentford’s early goal and the Rams’ first-half goals kept coming.

David Nugent pinged the ball up and over Daniel Bentley to take the lead before Mason Mount’s pin-point free-kick gave Derby a comfortable victory.

For Wilson, his reintroduction to the starting XI couldn’t have gone better after a frustrating few weeks on the sidelines.

The youngster, on-loan from Liverpool, was in the starting line-up for the opening league games against Reading and Leeds United as well as the Carabao Cup First Round clash against Oldham Athletic.

Just as he was getting settled into the squad and making his mark, he was faced with a cruel injury setback to derail his momentum.

“I felt against Oldham and the games when I got here, I was finding my feet and starting to play well,” Wilson told RamsTV.

“That injury was annoying really, but now I’m back in the starting XI, picked up a goal and I’m just looking forward from here.

“I’ve been desperate to get back out there, so to get my first goal I’m looking to kick on from there.”

His first Rams goal was a result of great-team play as Derby hit the Bees on the counter-attack.

Mount swooped in to intercept Mohamed Benrahma’s short corner and played it forward for Wilson and Craig Bryson to link up and work out the goal. A selfless last-minute pass by Bryson in the box gifted Wilson an easy finish.

“I think counter-attacks are one of our strengths,” he said.

“I think if we do things at speed, like we did there, then we are going to be tough to stop.

“With the pace we have got in the team and the clever players that we have got we know we can be good on the counter attack.

“Mase intercepted it off the short corner, played me and I saw Bryce making the run and managed to find him. Then I think he showed great awareness to give it me back and it was an easy finish in the end.

“We are a team and I think if we see someone in a better position than ourselves then we don’t think twice about squaring it to them. If the team wins then we are all happy.”

A pair of stellar performances by Frank Lampard’s squad this week stands them in great stead for a trip to face Manchester United in the Carabao Cup Third Round on Tuesday.

Wilson said that the team will carry their confidence through to the clash against the Premier League side.

“We go into that game away at Old Trafford with a lot of confidence in the way that we played against Blackburn, we deserved that victory and could have scored four or five and then again today, we scored three but maybe could have scored more,” he added.

“We are going to go to Old Trafford, play the way we play and be positive of picking up a result.”
