Whilst circumstances currently mean there’s no live football to enjoy, dcfc.co.uk is delving into the archives to feature a photograph from Derby County’s illustrious history.

Every day for the foreseeable future, we’ll provide you an image each day for supporters to enjoy and reminisce.

Derby County 4-1 Real Madrid (22nd October 1975)

Charlie George was the hero of the night at the Baseball Ground and he is pictured here firing in his first of three goals to thrash Real Madrid 4-1 in the European Cup in the first leg of their Second Round clash.

Some 34,839 fans packed into the Baseball Ground and only had to wait ten minutes for George to fire in his first goal of the game. Five minutes later he doubled the lead from the penalty spot. Pirri pulled one back for the Spanish giants with a long-range effort, but David Nish extended the Rams’ lead to 3-1 ahead of half-time.

George completed his hat-trick in the 77th minute, again from the penalty spot to set Derby up well for the second leg in Spain.

An amazing 120,000 turned out at the Bernabeu, the largest record attendance ever to watch a Derby County match, but Real Madrid stood up to the challenge and handed Derby a 5-1 defeat after extra-time to move on to the Third Round.
