Clough & Mackay Watch Derby In Action Against Tottenham Hotspur In 2002
Pictured here are two legendary former Derby County managers shaking hands at Pride Park Stadium back in the 2001/02 season.
Brian Clough and Dave Mackay were in the stands to watch Derby defeat Tottenham Hotspur 1-0 in March 2002 thanks to a goal from Lee Morris.
Clough, who guided Derby to the Second Division championship in 1968/69 and then the First Division title in 1971/72, was the man that first brought Mackay to the club in 1968 as a player.
The work of Clough, reviving the Rams’ fortunes and making them one of the best sides in English football at the time, is remembered fondly to this day and he is regarded as the club’s greatest-ever manager.
Mackay was an influential figure on the pitch as Derby returned to the top-flight and then established themselves in the First Division under Clough’s guidance.
The Scotsman was appointed as the Rams’ manager in October 1973, following spells in charge of Swindon Town and Nottingham Forest, following Clough’s resignation.
Under Mackay, Derby were First Division champions in 1974/75 and also lifted the Charity Shield in August 1975 in another memorable spell during the club's history.
Both Clough and Mackay are sadly no longer with us, after passing away in 2004 and 2015 respectively, but remain remembered at Pride Park Stadium.
A statue of Clough, and his assistant manager Peter Taylor, is located on Pride Park and was unveiled in 2010 while a statue of Mackay was erected outside the Players’ Entrance in late 2015.
