Derby County forward Morgan Whittaker has been named in the EFL 'Team of the Week' for his impressive display in the 3-1 Sky Bet Championship victory at Birmingham City on Wednesday night.

The 19-year-old, who was making his 21st appearance of the season, made a telling impact against the Blues as the Rams finished their 2019/20 Sky Bet Championship season with victory.

Midfielder Graeme Shinnie had opened the scoring for Derby in the opening six minutes of the game, however, Birmingham drew level 10 minutes in the second half through Ivan Sunjic.

Whittaker then replaced goalscorer Shinnie on 65 minutes and with the game seeming to peter out into a draw, he netted his first professional goal after coming through the youth ranks at the Rams' Academy.

After good work from Jack Marriott to win the ball high up the pitch, he picked out Whittaker, who saw his first effort saved, but he headed home the rebound to put Derby ahead on the night.

He then turned provider minutes later as he set up fellow Academy graduate Louie Sibley to secure his fifth goal of the season.

Whittaker’s statistics made for impressive reading at the end of the game. After playing only 25 minutes, he scored one, assisted one, had two shots on target and completed 100% of his passes.

It was a great way to round the season off for the youngster, who in 2018/19 contributed to over 40 goals in the Under-18s and Under-23s.

After that impressive run, he was awarded his debut for Derby County last August against Scunthorpe United in the First Round of the Carabao Cup, whilst his first league start came in a 1-1 draw against Sheffield Wednesday back in December.
