Derby County have today completed the signing of Scotland international goalkeeper David Marshall.

Marshall, who is 35, has joined Derby on a two-year contract from Wigan Athletic – subject to EFL clearance - after successfully undergoing a medical and agreeing personal terms.

The Glasgow-born shot-stopper has 33 caps to his name for Scotland at international level and has been a regular for the Tartan Army under current Head Coach Steve Clarke.

The experienced custodian brings a wealth of experience with him to Pride Park Stadium, having recorded almost 550 games in club football to date.

During the 2019/20 season he played 40 times in all competitions and kept 15 clean sheets from 39 appearances in the Sky Bet Championship, which included a run of ten shut outs from 11 matches in the second half of the campaign.

Marshall is Derby’s second addition to the squad ahead of the 2020/21 season following the arrival of defender Mike te Wierik from Dutch side Groningen earlier this summer.

Reacting to the signing, manager Phillip Cocu said: “We’re really pleased to welcome David Marshall to Derby County.

“David is an experienced goalkeeper and he has played at the highest level in both England and Scotland.

“He has also performed at international level for Scotland and I believe that David will be a positive addition to not only our goalkeeping department but also our squad.”

Marshall began his professional career in his homeland with Celtic and made his first-team debut in the 2002/03 season as a late substitute in a Scottish Cup tie against St Johnstone.

His breakthrough season came during the 2003/04 campaign as he made 18 appearances in all competitions, including a stunning Man of the Match display in a 0-0 draw at the Nou Camp against Barcelona – who had a certain Phillip Cocu in their midfield - in the UEFA Cup as the Hoops recorded a 1-0 aggregate victory against the Spanish giants.

Marshall’s time at Celtic saw him make 50 first-team appearances and claim four major honours, the Scottish Premier League in 2003/04, the Scottish Cup in 2003/04 and 2004/05 and the Scottish League Cup in 2005/06.

The 2006/07 season saw Marshall get his first taste of English football during a loan spell at Norwich City, before the move was made permanent in the summer of 2007.

After two seasons at Carrow Road, he moved to Cardiff City and went on to spend seven full seasons on the books with the Bluebirds.

During that time he made 281 appearances for the Welsh outfit and was a key member of their title-winning Championship side during the 2012/13 campaign, meaning he was able to play Premier League football for the first time in 2013/14.

Marshall’s next stop was Hull City in the summer of 2016 and he played 67 times for the Tigers across three seasons, including one campaign in the Premier League, prior to joining Wigan Athletic last summer and was a near ever-present in Paul Cook’s side.

On the international stage, Marshall has been capped 33 times by Scotland and he made his international bow in 2004 against Hungary. After a spell out of the international picture, he returned to the fold under Steve Clarke following his appointment in 2019.
