Wayne Rooney is hoping for a positive end to Derby County’s event-filled 2021/22 season.

Derby will conclude the Sky Bet Championship campaign against Cardiff City at Pride Park Stadium on Saturday 7th May (12:30pm kick-off).

Rooney’s side have had to battle against the odds all season in the backdrop of several off-the-field problems.

Although retaining their Championship status for next term has illuded them, it hasn’t been for the want of trying to overcome the hefty 21-point deduction imposed on the club.

Entering administration in September resulted in a 12-point deduction and was followed by nine points in November for a historical breach of profitability and sustainability rules, taking the total chalked off them to 21 and leaving many on the outside writing the Rams off.

Transfer embargoes and player departures in January did little to help Derby’s cause, but Rooney and his squad faced up to the gigantic challenge head on and have earned plaudits as a result.

Had it not been for the 21-point deduction, the Rams would be on 55 points and in 17th place, which is some achievement given the hurdles placed in front of them since last August and a considerable improvement on the 2020/21 season.

After picking up a long awaited 2-0 success at Blackpool on Saturday, courtesy of Malcolm Ebiowei and Eiran Cashin’s first-ever career goals, before a travelling following of over 4,000 supporters - Rooney wants to end the season on a high.

“We will prepare right for next week, which is the last game of the season,” Rooney told RamsTV following the win at Blackpool.

“I hope as many fans as possible come down and support the players in that last game.

“Hopefully we can get the three points to finish the season off and everyone will enjoy a well-earned rest.”

Rooney has spoken about the superb backing from the Derby crowd all season long.

The Rams’ supporters have thrown their unconditional backing both at Pride Park and on the road throughout the season, especially in the most testing of circumstances.

Rooney said: “It was important to reward the fans with a win at Blackpool, the support all season has been magnificent.

“We’re proud of them for supporting us all over the country this year and at home, so want to end the season with a positive result.”
