Derby County Head Coach was left frustrated as he watched his side narrowly lose out 1-0 to Ipswich Town on Friday evening in Sky Bet League One.
A second-half goal from Wes Burns off the back of a defensive mistake was the difference on an otherwise extremely tight affair at Portman Road in front of the Sky Sports cameras.
Ipswich's Kayden Jackson
had the opportunity to make the game safe for Town from the penalty
spot late on, but Derby goalkeeper Joe Wildsmith saved his effort.
Speaking to RamsTV after the final whistle, Warne says the team lacked the cutting-edge needed to get something from the game.
On the performance…
I think the team weren’t as good on the ball as I would like. Out of possession the lads worked really hard and reduced Ipswich to very few chances. Joe Wildsmith didn’t make more than two saves apart from the penalty save - which wasn’t a penalty for me.
I just don’t think we had our cutting-edge and weren’t as good on the ball as usual. There was always a pass that was under-hit or misdirected. I can’t knock the lads' effort or desire to win but I just don’t think we had enough.
All in all, I am pleased with the effort at a team which has taken a couple of summers to build and we’re not a million miles off.
On the mistake for the only goal…
I’m not criticising my captain and in fairness Curtis Davies was the first one to put his hands up. Mistakes happen in football all the time but we should still make their goalkeeper make more saves than we did. I think we made him make zero.
In games you’re going to concede goals but you’ve got to back yourselves to score two or three and tonight we didn’t give ourselves the opportunity really.
In terms of positives, I thought Korey Smith was outstanding and probably our best player on the pitch for ball retention.
On not creating enough chances…
I need to watch the match back. We aren’t playing against 11 people that are going to lay down, they are going to do everything they can to stop you.
Sometimes it’s just down to the opposition making it really tough for you but there were times that they weren’t and we overcomplicated things for no reason. When you get in the final third, you should make the defenders defend and I don’t think we made them do that enough.
On Curtis Davies and Tom Barkhuizen's injuries…
I didn’t notice anything was wrong with Tom and when I went to make the substitution he ran the length of the pitch so I think he’s at least tweaked his hamstring.
Curtis was struggling as well and we’d already made all of our changes - we tried to do everything we could to change the outcome of the game. It doesn’t look great on either of them for Tuesday night at least. It will be next man up, as always.
On Jason Knight…
He’s in a pot for a couple of weeks before he can restart training. The best case for Knighty will be about a month. We can’t feel sorry for ourselves though, we have to pick the lads up and prepare for Tuesday when we face Exeter at Pride Park.
On the two home games next up…
We are up against two very good sides in Exeter and Bristol Rovers, who will make it very difficult for us. They will be really tough games as they always are. Every match is tough. We came here to win points, we didn’t come here to sit behind the ball. That’s the joy of football, you always get the opportunity to correct things a few days later.
