Derby County have made Forest Green Rovers goalkeeper Luke McGee their second addition of the January Transfer Window.

The 27-year-old shot-stopper has joined the Rams on loan from their fellow Sky Bet League One side for the remainder of the 2022/23 season.

McGee’s signing provides further depth to Derby’s goalkeeping department following Joseph Anang’s return to Premier League outfit West Ham United, after his season-long loan switch was cut short last week.

Joe Wildsmith has been the Rams’ first-choice goalkeeper throughout the season and McGee’s signing offers additional cover alongside the experienced Scott Loach.

McGee, who will not be available for Monday night's Emirates FA Cup Fourth Round meeting with West Ham United at Pride Park Stadium, is the Rams’ second arrival of the month following Norwich City winger Tony Springett joining on loan a fortnight ago.

Luke McGee In Profile

McGee’s professional career began in London with Tottenham Hotspur and, after progressing through the youth ranks, he was handed a professional contract in 2014.

He racked up 45 appearances on loan at Peterborough United in League One during the 2016/17 campaign as he gained his first experience of senior football, and his impressive form saw him handed the coveted Players’ Player of the Year accolade.

McGee moved to another third tier outfit in the form of Portsmouth in the summer of 2017 for an undisclosed fee, leaving Tottenham after failing to make a senior appearance.

He was a regular in his first season at Fratton Park but found first-team minutes limited in the following two campaigns and, after a short loan spell at Bradford City in League Two, he opted to move on to pastures new at the end of his contract.

McGee joined Forest Green Rovers as a free agent in the summer of 2020 and went on to play an instrumental role in their back-to-back pushes for promotion from the fourth tier.

After tasting defeat in the play-off semi-finals against Newport County in 2020/21, Forest Green were League Two champions the following season and gained promotion to League One for the first time in their history.

The shot-stopper played in all 46 of their league matches to claim a league winner’s medal, while he was also named as the League Two Player of the Month in January 2022 as a reward for his fine performances.

McGee has been a regular in League One for Forest Green this term, featuring 25 times in all competitions, and recently surpassed 100 appearances for the Gloucestershire outfit.

In total, McGee has made 214 appearances as a professional and is closing in on 200 outings in the EFL alone.
