Derby County defender Korey Smith says the team will learn from their disappointing 4-1 defeat to Barnsley at Oakwell on Saturday afternoon.

The Rams were punished by a number of errors on the day and although frustrating, Smith believes the side will be better for it moving forward.

Speaking to RamsTV following the Sky Bet League One match, Smith gave his verdict on the contest.

On the performance...

We shot ourselves in the foot really. We've got to learn from it. Normally our passing is a lot better. They had a good press to be fair to them but we need to be smarter away from home and maybe not play as nice as we like to.

We've got to learn those lessons but we've got 14 games to go, it's one three points we’ve dropped and we can't be sad as a team, as a coaching staff, as a club and as fans - we've just got to go to the next one. We move onto the next one now, the game is done and we've got a game on Tuesday against Cheltenham so we can't be disappointed for too long.

On if it was just 'one of those days'...

It just felt weird. We probably could have been two or three-nil up before they scored. They did have a good press but we did break that a few times early and if we get that goal then all of a sudden the game is a little bit different. In the second half at 3-1 we were going for it a little bit and we did have a few good chances but it didn't seem to fall for us. Even if it goes to 3-2 we felt like we could win the game but it didn't seem to drop to us today and we were sloppier than we normally are but we can't stay disappointed for too long.

On Barnsley's first goal...

It was confusing to be honest. Everyone was saying it was offside but I haven't watched it back. There was so much going on and it was hitting off people's knees and all sorts but I haven't watched it back so can't really comment.

On the quick turnaround ahead of Cheltenham...

It's a good thing. We're really disappointed and the lads are down in the changing room but we can't stay down when there's such a quick turnaround. We've got a lot of games coming up quickly, 14 games to go and a lot of points to play for. We lost three points today but at the end of the day, the game is done and we have to move on and learn from it.

We've got a big few weeks. We're still in a good position and we've got to look forward.

On the near 5,000 travelling fans...

I just want to say that we really appreciate them. We were losing the game but they kept behind us to be honest. They kept going until the end and clapped us off the pitch. We really appreciate them and we're disappointed that we couldn't send them home with the three points.

It was a sloppy performance in areas but at the same time we could have scored a lot of goals. The frustrating thing is that we kind of gave them their goals, they didn't break us down in general play. We've got to learn from that but we appreciate the fans and hopefully we can give them something to smile about over the next few weeks.
